EXIBART Rivivere, ridefinire, rimodulare: conversazione con Caroline Ricca Lee2024 NOV, 4 – 14H00
Interview with Caroline Ricca Lee by the art critic and curator Matteo Scabeni for Exibart, about the solo show “Echoes” at Artissima 2024. An conversation about diasporic cosmologies, dreamy like narratives, the artist's obsession with shocking and negotiating different materialities, philosophies of the sublime, and acts of care/destruction.
"A constant cataloguing of personal and impersonal objects that the artist incorporates into their works in a maximalist perspective: accumulating becomes a necessary practice to trace the ancestral origins of our indeterminate identity. Organic materials, inner linings of clothes, photographs, and objects of all kinds dominate a representation that brings back the memory of objects. Rich Lee chooses that which is worn, that which possesses a soul of its own regardless of man's gesture." — Matteo Sabeni.

ARTS LIVE Riapre la Sala Sospesa all’Oval con la mostra di Caroline Ricca Lee 2024 NOV, 1 – 16H00The Oval's Sala Sospesa at Artissima 2024 opens again with a exhibition by Caroline Ricca Lee, who, focusing on the investigation of archiving and memory in East-Asian narratives in Brazil, presents the new production created in residence in Sicily.

ECHOES Exhibition Artissima Fair 2024 2024 OCT, 31 – 8H00
In 2023, artist Caroline Ricca Lee was the recipient of the ISOLA SICILIA Prize at the Artissima Fair in Turin, Italy. As an attribute of the award, the artist had the opportunity to conduct a residency in the Sicilian territory and will be presenting in November at Artissima 2024 a series of new works based on this experience, as well as past prize-winning works.
The exhibition “Echoes”, curated by Fondazione OELLE Mediterraneo Antico ETS, delves into the sublime condition inherent in what endures through time: Imperfection. Incoherence. Chaos. Echoes. A story can be told through abysses and reminiscences, however, as much as by an assemblage of dreams and multiple possibilities of care. The body is a portal that has been open for centuries: a way to find an ancestral voice in ourselves.

BROOKLYN RAIL The Appearance: Art of the Asian Diaspora in Latin America & The Caribbean 2024 NOV, 4 – 14H00
The artist and contributor to the Brooklyn Rail, Amanda Millet-Sorsa, wrote:
"There is a conversation between the sculptural table works by contemporary artists Cecile Chong (Chinese-Ecuadorian) and Caroline Ricca Lee (Chinese-Japanese Brazilian). In the former, three abstracted figurine-like sculptures made of tree bark coated in yellow-white wax form an amorphic horn-like head that looks straight at us like sunflower soldiers, while Lee’s ceramic and textile objects are made to be similarly handheld in scale. Stylized figures of an elderly woman are carved into flat clay echoing a Venus of Willendorf votive. The inner layers of Lee’s sandwich sculpture, Veter [Pour] (2022) are composed of old fabric cut and folded to size from clothing belonging to Lee’s grandmother."

HYPERALLERGIC A View of Asian Diaspora from Halfway Out
2024 SET, 4 – 17H00
The researcher, writer and art historian Lisa Yin Zhang, Associate Editor at Hyperallergic, wrote:
"For 'appearance' has another connotation other than how something looks: It also denotes presence. Tie Jojima and Yudi Rafael’s curation here makes it impossible to ignore a truth so obvious it’s often forgotten: that the experience of art is an embodied exchange fundamentally between the work and the viewer. With masterful clarity, the exhibition constantly reminds you of your own positionality within a larger social and physical framework by setting up lines of sight and movement that draw attention to the orientation of your body in the gallery space. In using the framework of “appearance” — ranging from visibility and invisibility to apparitions, impressions, and more, according to the wall text — the curators sidestep a problem endemic to exhibitions on diasporic experiences: essentializing certain facets of an artist’s identity, whether it be their so-called Asian-ness, Latin-American-ness, or some hybrid thereof."

2024 SET, 19 – 14H00
Watch here the co-curators Tie Jojima and Yudi Rafael speak about the intention behind the exhibition, on view through December 14 at Americas Society in New York.
“We want viewers to understand, in this exhibition, the complexity and the processes of each individual artist: working within their own countries, within their own contexts, and their very specific family histories, histories of migration, how they ended up being Latin American,” says Tie Jojima, co-curator of The Appearance: Art of the Asian Diaspora in Latin America & the Caribbean. “But also understand these artists as a whole, understand this being a conversation within Latin America, with specific histories of racialization that in many countries excluded Asians from narratives of national identity.”
The Appearance: Art of the Asian Diaspora in Latin America & the Caribbean is the first exhibition in New York City to center on the artistic production of the Asian diaspora in the regions from the 1950s to the present.

THE APPEARANCE Exhibition
2024 SET, 4 – 17H00
The Appearance: Art of the Asian Diaspora in Latin America & the Caribbean is the first exhibition in New York City to center the artistic production of the Asian diaspora in the regions from the 1940s to the present. Focusing on postwar and contemporary art, the exhibition showcases the work of thirty artists from fifteen countries working in a range of artistic mediums including painting, sculpture, performance, photography, and video, to shed light into strategies and themes that resonate across a wide array of Asian diasporic practice throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.
The exhibition embraces and performs the multiple and interrelated meanings embedded in the notion of appearance, inspired by Japanese Brazilian artist Lydia Okumura’s 1975 print by the same title. From acts of appearing and becoming visible—including different types of apparitions—to the idea of impressions and physical resemblance, artists in the show grapple with the complexities of negotiating (in)visibility, revisiting and remaking family archives and stories, and engaging and reconfiguring spiritual practices. The show also addresses abstraction as a formal strategy linked to language, the senses, and the body in the context of the Americas’ postwar art.

ISOLA SICILIA Residency
2024 MARCH, 28 – 13H05
"Last year, I received the ISOLA SICILIA prize by Fondazione OELLE Mediterraneo Antico at the 30th Artissima. In addition to the award, I currently have the opportunity to embark on an artistic residency in Sicily, in which one of the aims is to sew dialogues between my research and the territory.
It’s only been the first week in Aci Castello, but I can already foresee more threads than I imagined: Catania reveals as an assemblage of memories. And being near Etna: one of the world’s most active volcanoes, humbles us in the face of nature’s force.
I visited a local artist and craftsman who works with basalt, and he told me: “Lava is the symbol of destruction, but I wanted to make something beautiful of it”. I believe this sentence captures how history unfolds here; yet, it also dialogues with an essence in my work: we lose as much as we gain. Time unfolds beyond our desire, and even though we have something incomplete or flawed in our hands, it’s all we have; for that reason, it’s beautiful.

Caroline Ricca Lee has been nominated the winner of second ISOLA SICILIA Prize. The Oelle Foundation made the announcement during the 2023 edition of Artissima, which took place in Turin, Italy, from November 3rd to 5th.

When speaking about your work, Caroline Ricca Lee says: " I could discuss how all the works somehow reveal reflections on memory and ancestry. These issues are very precious to my production from the beginning, but especially in the works presented at Artissima 2023, I am speculating about heritage, territory, and transgenerational connection".
Book release: "'Yellow Perill' in present times"
2023 NOVEMBER, 2 – 16H05
"Nessa publicação, compartilho o capítulo 'Feminismo Asiático no Brasil: raça amarela, gênero e geração'.
— Caroline Ricca Lee
On last Saturday, was the release event for our book “’The Yellow Peril’ in present times: reflections of a new generation” in São Paulo. Organizers Hugo Katsuo and Edylene Severiano, published by @selocaminhos, preface by Flávia Rios.
"I wrote the chapter “Asian Feminism in Brazil: yellow race, gender and generation”. I share some updated perspectives, in which I highlight the analysis of gender fetishization and coloniality: a generified perspective of the Yellow Peril. For nearly ten years, I have been researching gender, race and Asian identity in Brazil; and it all started in a conversation with my grandmother.
I invite you to read it, and I emphasize: mention you research ancestors and contemporaries. It’s a communal responsibility to weave new archives in the continuous insubmission to the erasure of narratives." — Caroline Ricca Lee

Simultaneously to Ana Mendieta's (Havana, 1948 - New York, 1985) historical show, Silhouette on Fire, the collective exhibition terra abrecaminhos emerges. The exhibition is based on an approach anchored in decolonial feminism that brings together the work of 30 artists who self-identify as cisgender women, trans women, travestis and non-binary people with archetypal, cultural, political and spiritual aspects of Ana Mendieta's work in their feminist implications.
The curatorship, coordinated by Hilda de Paulo, invited artists from different generations, daughters of the mestiza and border diaspora, aligned with the thinking of Chicana philosopher Gloria Anzaldúa. The works are presented in different media, including live performances, whose aesthetic and political propositions find many points of contact with Ana Mendieta's performative gestures. Various authors support the conceptual discourse of terra abrecaminhos, including Gloria Anzaldúa, Cherríe Moraga, bell hooks, Audre Lorde and Donna Haraway.
